about isahrai

An apt description of my personal style would be "quirky" while my working style is best summarized as "meticulously quirky." I take on projects, both in the personal and professional realm, that challenge me to create a balance between passion and skill. Furthermore, I find that my brain works better when it is operating on several projects and levels at once. Discovering connections between my thought processes, clients' needs, and technology is the best perk of working as a freelance writer, designer, and consultant.

I am a writer simply because it is who I am. It is what fuels me and what frustrates me to no end. My identity as "writer" will always be listed first on my business card. I came to design out of the same curiosity that continues to feed each new project. While my writing is how I express my own voice, each website I create is based on discovering the voice of my client. My objective with each project is to produce a site that is both beautiful and efficient by creating an easy-to-navigate and aesthetically unique website that can be updated easily as the site's needs grow.

I fully believe in bending the rules. This is evident in my usage of dynamic publishing software to run far more than the traditional blog, my never-ending search for unique navigational menus, my liberal use of an embosser, and my refusal to stop calling myself a playwright even though theater work accounts for only 5% of my income. The most audacious example of my rule bending, though, came when I packed two suitcases and moved to Zihuatanejo, Mexico, after a decade of city life in New York, New Orleans, and Boston.

Living in this tropical fishing town might have let me slow down to live "on Mexican time," but technology keeps me working at a modern pace. I don't have it "all" but I come pretty damn close as I design websites while lounging poolside, teleconference with clients in a sarong and sandals, write from a hammock on my rooftop terrace, and check emails on my Blackberry in between sets at my band's latest gig. After 5 years of working via long distance, I have both the fully equipped home office and skillset for doing so successfully and often with great benefit to my client. This includes having direct US & Mexico telephone lines, Canadian & Western Europe virtual numbers, 24-hour email access via Blackberry & DSL, online videoconferencing capabilities, and an addiction to my Moleskine notebook organization system.
